Self Help: Positive Thinking is the Secret of Success
There are many guides to self-help and self-improvement. Though these various guides may have different approaches and different techniques, you will find one common feature in all the different systems of self-help. The common thread running though all self-help books and courses is the importance of positive thinking.

“As you think, so you become.” This is the psychological principle that lies behind the power of positive thinking. Each human being is endowed with great possibilities. However, these great possibilities are not always activated. The reason for this underachievement is in large part due to negative thinking.

Where does negative thinking come from? There is a one word answer to this question: suggestions. We receive suggestions about ourselves from the environment. If a child makes a mistake and his teacher says “You are stupid,” then that child is getting a negative outer-suggestion. If the child starts thinking “I am stupid,” then the outer suggestion becomes an inner auto-suggestion and this is very harmful. If someone starts to think that “I am stupid,” his or her intellectual progress will be stopped.
On the other hand, if a child is told “You are intelligent, you are smart”, then she will probably start giving herself positive auto-suggestions, and she will have a much greater possibility of learning new things, than the boy or girl who has received negative outer suggestions and has acquired a negative self-image.
Listen to the outer suggestions that are being hurled at you by the people around you. More importantly, listen to the suggestions that you are giving to yourself. Are you saying “I can’t do that” “I am not good at sports, etc.”? If so, then you have to change your negative auto-suggestions into positive auto-suggestions.
How to Cultivate Positive Thinking
There are two parts in the process of building your powers of positive thinking. The first part is external. You need positive encouragement from your environment. The best way to get such positive encouragement is to hang out with positive and supportive people. Find people with similar interests and aspirations and spend more time with them. Reduce your contact with people whose conduct is not helping you to advance towards the improved person that you want to become.
Another way to get “contact” with inspiring people is to read the books written by great personalities and enlightened thinkers. When it comes to literature and media in general (TV, films, music) we have two choices. We can choose material that is uplifting and helpful to achieving our goals or we can choose books and entertainment which will not help us to reach our long term goals.
When it comes to dealing with the environment around us, a wise sage said, “If you see something that is degenerating, take your eyes away from it. If you hear something that will bring you down, don’t listen to it. If you can gain overall self-restraint, you will overcome all sorrow.”
Positive Inner Suggestions
Once you have surrounded yourself with a good inspiring environment, then you have to strengthen your inner positive thinking. The first thing to do is to take a firm determination. “I will achieve my goal” and always remember this affirmation. You have to always remember that you are a human being endowed with infinite possibilities and that you have the potential for greatness. This is not a lie, but the truth, for even the so-called great thinkers only use 2% of their capacity. Each of us can achieve far more than we have ever done, if only we will apply ourselves to the task of thinking positively and acting positively.
Once you have these initial positive thoughts you have to develop them with constant remembrance. Observe you own thinking. When a negative thought comes, replace it with a positive thought. Do this as much as possible. However thinking is not enough, we have to act in a positive way, putting our thoughts into practice.
